There was a lot of hype surrounding the general availability of Windows 11 24H2 when Microsoft recently published a blog post suggesting that Windows 11 24H2 could arrive within a month. However, Microsoft later clarified that the blog post had nothing to do with the general availability of Windows 11 24H2.
To recap, author Reanne_Wong wrote an article discussing improved data protection with Windows and Microsoft Copilot. In the article, Wong highlighted new functionality for his Copilot AI assistant with enterprise data protection for users signed in with an Entra account and Copilot integration directly within the Microsoft 365 app.
Wong revealed that all of these changes were coming soon, with the addition of Copilot’s enterprise data protection rolling out at the time of writing. Copilot’s integration with the Microsoft 365 app is scheduled for an optional non-security preview update on September 24, and a mainstream support release on October 8 for all supported versions of Windows 11. Windows 10 also got the update in November.
Many misinterpreted Wong’s article as meaning that these release schedules also addressed the mainstream availability of Windows 11 24H2 — leading many to think that Windows 11 24H2 would arrive on October 8. However, Microsoft inadvertently reworded the article, making it very easy to jump to that conclusion. The original article was reworded to include the term “feature update” when discussing the release dates for these two updates to Copilot, saying, “The shift to the Microsoft 365 app as the entry point for Microsoft Copilot will align with the annual release of the Windows 11 feature update.”
The article has since been edited to remove the term “feature update.” An editor’s note at the top clarifies that the aforementioned wording does not, in fact, have anything to do with the general availability of Windows 11 24H2.
As a result, we again don’t have a confirmed release date for Windows 11 24H2 on non-Copilot+ PCs, other than the fact that it’s set to debut sometime this year. As a reminder, Windows 11 24H2 has already launched, but it’s exclusive to Copilot+ PCs for now. It’s still not available for the rest of the Windows 11 PC ecosystem, however.
